What This Grandmother Accidentally Fed To Her Family Landed Them In The Hospital
Some might say that expiration dates on food packaging are just suggestions, mere invitations to guess-and-check as you see fit. As it turns out, though, those dates are there for a reason, since even processed foods go bad after a while. (Yes, that includes Twinkies.)
To save yourself a trip to the hospital or worse, don”t do what this grandmother in Italy did by choosing to ignore the expiration dates. You could end up poisoning yourself and your whole family!
Earlier this year, a 77-year-old Italian grandmother, identified by police as Mrs. Rosetta, decided it would be a treat to serve her grandkids some hot chocolate.
The woman found a couple of packets in her cupboard and mixed them into warm milk for her two grandchildren and one of their friends. She also made a cup for herself and served one to her partner and to her son.
What she didn”t know was how old those hot chocolate packets were. Within minutes, everyone started to feel extremely ill. That”s when they realized what had happened. Turns out, the hot chocolate packages expired way back in June 1990.
The entire group spent the next few days in the hospital. One of the kids had to remain hospitalized for almost three weeks.

This is why you always check the expiration dates on everything. Don”t assume it”s just a guideline, or you”ll end up in the hospital. The flip side is that most people don”t tend to keep things in the cupboard for 25 years. So maybe Mrs. Rosetta just made an honest mistake. I”m sure she feels pretty bad about it either way.
