The Mystery Surrounding The Deaths Of These People Stumps Authorities, Even To This Day

By  |

Although it is mostly used in plotlines on TV shows, spontaneous human combustion appears to be a harsh reality. It is as creepy as any episode of The X Files. The phenomenon is fairly self-explanatory in name, involving the arbitrary ignition of human flesh without any outside source of heat. It sounds like something that would happen to a cartoon character, but several shocking cases have been observed, and researchers still don”t quite now how they occurred.

Although the concept of spontaneous human combustion (or SHC) is supposed to be completely random, a British journal in 1938 attempted to find some commonalities amongst the victims.

It observed that most victims of SHC appeared to be alcoholic, overweight, and elderly women.

The combustions all appear to have a similar pattern as well, leaving mostly ashes, grease, and a distinct smell. Strangely, some or all of the limbs remain in tact.

Some scientists have attempted to debunk the spontaneousness of SHC by hypothesizing that there are some natural causes to explain it.

Some decidedly morbid scientists suspect that, due to the obesity of some of the victims, they were unable to move once their bed had already caught aflame, and subsequently caught fire.

Another common scapegoat is cigarettes. They supposedly trigger SHC when, unknown to their owner, are still lit in a pocket.

A doctor named John Abrahamson linked SHC to a rare natural occurrence called “ball lighting,” in which lighting forms a powerful orb, exploding anything that blocks its path.

In 1995, Larry E. Arnold had a theory that a new subatomic particle called the “pyrotron” was the cause of these combustions. He said they could easily be spurred into action if a person merely underwent extreme stress.

Notable cases of SHC include fireman George Mott, who was found in 1986 as just pile of ashes in his living room, one rib and his skull still in tact. There were was a pack of matches in the room, but none had been used. Aside from the ash, everything else in the room was completely in tact.

Just last month, an infant from Parangini village in India suffered from unexplained burns. Though the baby survived, the family believed that he suffered from a small bout of SHC, as his brother apparently did back in 2013.

There”s a ton of pseudoscience involved with talking about spontaneous human combustion. However, because of the inherent nature of the phenomenon, much of the evidence that could be use to debunk it gets destroyed in the flames. That shouldn”t stop us from enjoying a certain X Files episode, though.
