This Scenic Lake In India Is So Polluted That It Literally Caught Fire
India might only be the 4th biggest polluter in the world, but when the pollution gets bad on the sub-continent, it gets really bad. With a population of 1.2 billion and a booming industrial economy, it”s no wonder that the majority of the country”s pollution goes unchecked. In fact, the pollution is so bad in parts of India, that its impact seems to be literally challenging the laws of physics.
Welcome to Bellandur Lake, near the city of Bangalore, India. Scenic isn”t it? Well, only from a distance.
Last week, residents near Bellandur Lake had the chance to witness a strange, pollution-induced feat of physics: the water of Bellandur Lake literally caught fire.
This terrifying arial footage was taken as the lake water was burning, due to huge amounts of industrial byproducts being dumped in it.
This is what the lake looked like in the weeks leading up to the fire. It was covered in several feet of toxic foam.
Not only did the foam create the conditions for a hellish lake of fire, it also gave off noxious fumes that caused severe allergic reactions in the people living nearby.
Things will likely only get worse as India”s rainy season continues. There have been reports in the past that due to the rains, toxic foam in the lake has swelled up to as high as 12 feet, creating even more dangerous lake fire conditions.

Apparently, the wetlands surrounding Lake Bellandur used to filter most of the toxic elements out of the water as it came into the lake. Sadly, those wetlands have been destroyed by urban development. The people of Bangalore will likely have to live the rest of their lives with this heavily polluted lake.
