A woman in South Korea got a nasty surprise while she was eating squid. When she bit into a small squid that was cooked whole, something bizarre happened.
According to researchers, the woman almost immediately felt a sharp pain in her mouth after biting into the piece. The pain persisted, and eventually, she found herself at the doctor, complaining of a strange feeling in her mouth…
She described the feeling in her mouth as “bug-like organisms.” That”s when doctors took a look and discovered something bizarre. A dozen baby cephalopod sacs had attached themselves to her mouth.
The little sacs were actually small pods covered in a cement-like material that makes them sticky.
Once the pods were removed, scientists identified them as squid spermatophores. These spermatophores contain semen that is used by the squid for reproduction in the wild. (Talk about a horrifying realization.)
Incidents like this are somewhat common in the Far East, where squid is more likely to be eaten whole or raw.
For all you calamari lovers out there, have no fear. When squid is prepared in the West, all of its internal organs are removed prior to cooking, which means there is no risk of getting spermatophores stuck in your mouth.

Not that I was a big fan of calamari to begin with, but this story is enough to make me swear off the stuff for life, just to be safe. Yuck. I really don”t want any squid trying to get me “pregnant.”
